I recently moved from Washington DC to San Francisco. I decided to take my time and make the cross-country drive into my own mini-adventure: stops at roadside towns made famous as places to “get your kicks” in the 1960s, a ceremonious walk up the steps known as the “gateway to the west”, long conversations with strangers about the history of our country, graffiti covered Cadillacs, deserts without air conditioning….the encounters could fill the pages of this story all on their own.

In addition to all the adventures, driving 3,000 miles also leaves a lot of time for thinking. For example – if much of our country is peppered with old fashioned “historic” gas stations, doesn’t that, in effect, make most of our country a hazardous waste site? Or, if we have left-footed people, why don’t we have left-footed vehicles? And, then there was the thought that I spent nearly the entire state of Oklahoma on:

Why is it that being healthy isn’t thought to be as much “fun” as a cross-country road trip?

When people think about being “healthy” or “nutrition content” the alarm bells go off and they think “restrictive” and “boring”. And it can be just that.

Except for when it’s not.

Except for when being healthy is about a holistic approach to living your best life and engaging yourself in an adventure towards living a more radiant, happier, and yes – “healthier” life. It’s bigger than restricting the food you eat or intensifying your exercise routine. Yes, food and exercise are part of a healthy lifestyle. But to say they’re the only part is not unlike a trip planned using Google maps. The directions will get you to your destination – if you pay close attention to the street signs and don’t miss the turns. But you miss out on a lot, and when you travel off the path it’s hard to find the main road again.

Instead, think of being healthy as part of the whole experience of living well. Just like an open road adventure – you’ll have the most fun when you understand the whole map, know where you want to go, and then allow yourself to live the adventure of the highway. Because without the dirt roads, scenic stops, interesting people and exciting adventures, a road trip is just a really long drive.

Think on it: Where is your current diet leading you?
